Different Types of Battery Cage Systems

Several types of battery cages are available in the market, each offering unique features and advantages.

  1. Conventional Battery Cages: These are the most common type of battery cages, consisting of small wire cages stacked in several tiers. Each cage is often shared by 4 to 6 hens, providing sufficient space for each bird to move around, stand, and perch. The cages are typically equipped with a slanted wire floor that allows eggs to roll out, preventing damage. Conventional battery cages are known for their durability, ease of cleaning, and cost-effectiveness.

  2. Enriched Battery Cages: To address concerns over animal welfare, enriched battery cages have been developed as an alternative to conventional cages. These cages provide additional features such as perches, nesting areas, and dust-bathing zones. The inclusion of these features allows hens to engage in more natural behaviors, promoting their physical and psychological well-being. Enriched battery cages provide a balance between animal welfare and efficient egg production.

  3. Colony Battery Cages: Also known as furnished cages, colony battery cages are designed to provide a more spacious and social environment for hens. These cages are larger than conventional and enriched cages, often accommodating 30 to 60 hens in a single unit. Colony battery cages allow hens to move around more freely, stretch their wings, and interact with other birds. The inclusion of perches, nesting areas, and dust-bathing zones further enhances the hens’ quality of life.
