A dairy cow spends around half her day lying down, and that is when she makes milk: lying time drives rumination and blood flow to the udder. Bare concrete cuts it short and hock injuries follow. A mattress is one of the few purchases whose return shows up in the can.

Water works the same way. A cow drinks often and in volume, and any interruption to supply shows up at the next milking rather than the next week — which is what an automatic drinker is for.
