Setting Up a Heat Lamp Brooders
When setting up a heat lamp brooder, there are several important factors to consider to ensure the safety and well-being of the young birds. First and foremost, it is crucial to choose the right location. Select a well-ventilated area, free from drafts and potential hazards. A spacious brooder will allow the chicks to move freely while maintaining a comfortable temperature.
The height and angle of the heat lamp are also critical. Hang the lamp approximately 20 inches above the floor surface, providing a focused heat source. Adjust the angle of the lamp to cover the entire brooder area evenly. Keeping a thermometer inside the brooder will help you monitor the temperature accurately. Aim for a consistent temperature of around 95°F (35°C) during the first week, gradually reducing it by 5°F (2.8°C) each week until the chicks are fully feathered.
